Grant Opportunities from the Gates Foundation and its partners

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and its funding partners in the Grand Challenges family of grant programs are inviting innovators to apply for three new grant opportunities:
Grand Challenges Explorations, an initiative to encourage innovative and unconventional global health and development solutions, is now accepting grant proposals for its latest application round. Applicants can be at any experience level; in any discipline; and from any organization, including colleges and universities, government laboratories, research institutions, non-profit organizations and for profit companies.
Proposals are being accepted online until May 15, 2012 on the following topics:
New Approaches for the Interrogation of Anti-malarial Compounds – NEW
Aid is Working. Tell the World – NEW
Design New Approaches to Optimize Immunization Systems
Explore New Solutions in Global Health Priority Areas
Protect Crop Plants from Biotic Stresses From Field to Market
Initial grants will be US $100,000 each, and projects showing promise will have the opportunity to receive additional funding of up to US $1 million. Full descriptions of the new topics and application instructions are available at: www.grandchallenges.org/explorations.
Saving Lives at Birth: A Grand Challenge for Development has launched its second call for innovative prevention and treatment approaches for pregnant women and newborns in poor, hard-to-reach communities around the world. In this round, the Saving Lives at Birth partners will fund transformative approaches that cut across three main domains: (i) science & technology; (ii) service delivery; and (iii) demand-side innovation.

Grand Challenges Canada is seeking proposals for Rising Stars in Global Health, a program looking for emerging innovators from developing countries with bold ideas with big impact to address real-world global health challenges.

IASSCS-FORD FOUNDATION SEXUALITIES RESEARCH GRANT PROGRAM

Introduction
IASSCS seeks to strengthen the field of social and cultural research on sexuality globally, including the development of research capacity, giving priority to the crucial need for diversity in this field of inquiry. Its mission is informed by the principles of social justice and human rights, with a focus on sexual rights and gender equality, as expressed in documents such as the Cairo Programme of Action, CEDAW and the UNGASS Declaration on HIV/AIDS.

IASSCS is pleased to announce a small research grants competition for researchers, with the objective to promote research capacity development and research dissemination during 2012. This new initiative is in line with IASSCS’ mission to strengthen research and research capacity globally in socio-cultural dimensions of sexuality, with special attention to countries where sexuality research is not well-developed. With financial support from the Ford Foundation, this initiative represents an important opportunity to strengthen IASSCS’ role and presence as an international research capacity-building institution.

The IASSCS Research Grant Program
A total of 10 small grants will be offered to early career researchers in each of the five regions constituting the Association (two per region, see regions below). These grants are intended to develop research in, or related to, the Global South and to encourage diverse methodological approaches to understanding sexuality. The newly formed IASSCS Research Development and Training Committee will oversee the program.

For the purposes of this program, early career researchers refers to graduate students within academic institutions, or to individuals based within organisations that have existing research capacity. Each applicant is required to demonstrate that her/his submitted proposal will either result in the completion of a Ph.D. degree, a peer-reviewed journal publication, or (for non-academically based applicants) is likely to contribute to strengthening sexuality research capacity in the host institution.

This research grants program will:
· Assist early career researchers in the:
o Completion of a graduate degree, the subject of which focuses on sexuality-related issues, or
o Undertaking of research that contributes to the strengthening of research capacity within their organisation
· Support and encourage early career researchers to share their research results, and broaden knowledge on sexuality issues at an international level.
· Support the development of social and cultural approaches to sexuality research in the five regions constituting the Association, prioritizing the Global South.
· Promote the development of diverse methodological and theoretical approaches to understanding sexuality.

AuthorAID Grant to Attend 2011 Summer Research Writing Course

BACKGROUND: Researchers from resource-poor settings tend to have difficulty publishing and otherwise communicating their work, mainly because the authors often lack sufficient writing and editorial skills. To help address this challenge, the AuthorAID project of the International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications (INASP) provides support to researchers through mentoring, networking, freely available resources, and research-writing workshops.

To provide further publication-related training to a researcher from a developing country, an AuthorAID at INASP grant to attend a summer research writing course is now available.

BENEFITS: The grant will enable a researcher from a developing country to attend a 3-to-4-week research writing course and subsequently travel to present the work at a conference. The course will be given at Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, USA, in summer 2011. The grant will cover the full tuition (up to $2,000), including access to Texas A&M University library resources, during the grant period. Housing on the Texas A&M campus also will be covered fully (up to $1,000). The recipient will receive a certificate of participation after completing the research writing course.

The grant recipient will be responsible for the costs of travel, food, and health insurance related to participating in the course. INASP will provide $2,500 to the grant recipient. This funding is to be used for two purposes: (1) to help defray expenses related to travel, food, and health insurance related to participating in the course and (2) to help cover the expenses associated with presenting the work at a conference.
