United Nations Young Professionals Programme

What is the UN Young Professionals Programme?

The Young Professionals Programme (YPP) is a recruitment initiative for talented, highly qualified professionals to start a career as an international civil servant with the United Nations Secretariat. It consists of an entrance examination and professional development programmes once successful candidates start their career with the UN.

Who can apply?

The YPP examination is held once a year and is open to nationals of countries participating in the annual recruitment exercise. The list of participating countries is published annually and varies from year to year.

Basic application criteria:

  • You must have the nationality of a participating country.
  • You must hold at least a first-level university degree relevant for the exam area you are applying for.
  • You must be 32 or younger by the end of the examination.
  • You must be fluent in either English or French.

Participating Countries

Each year, countries that are un- or under-represented in the United Nations, are invited to take part in the Young Professionals Programme. Countries taking part in the Programme this year are:

Algeria, Andorra, Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahrain, Barbados, Belarus, Belize, Bhutan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Brunei Darussalam, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Central African Republic, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, Czech Republic, Dominica, Gabon, Gambia, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Indonesia, Iraq, Jamaica, Japan, Kiribati, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Latvia, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mauritania, Monaco, Montenegro, Mozambique, Namibia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Pakistan, Palau, Paraguay, Peru, Poland, Samoa, San Marino, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Slovakia, Solomon Islands, Somalia, Swaziland, Syria, Tanzania, Thailand, Togo, Turkey, Tuvalu, United Arab Emirates, United States, Vanuatu, Vietnam, Zambia.

Application Guidelines – Eligibility Requirements for the Japan Foundation Prizes for Global Citizenship 2015

The Japan Foundation Prizes for Global Citizenship is intended to support organizations based in Japan that endeavor to strengthen networks among citizens both inside and outside Japan, and share the knowledge, idea and expertise through Intercultural Exchange.

Eligible activities by organizations included:

  1. 1.Promoting regional/community development through arts and culture
    Activities to create vibrant and lively regions and communities through arts and culture exchange that connects between Japan and overseas countries.
  2. 2.Promoting diversity of culture
    Activities to understand and respect a diversity of culture including language education in order to build a vibrant and lively regions and communities.
  3. 3.Promoting people-to-people collaboration and international mutual understanding
    Activities to strengthen networks among citizens both inside and beyond Japan and mutual understanding through intercultural exchange.

Eligible organizations must be:

Organizations based in Japan whose activities are remarkable in the areas on international cultural exchange for high public interests.
* No legal status of the organization is required but the local governments are excluded.

Five Selection Criteria:

  1. ?1?Innovation: Activities to become exemplary and leading role models for other organizations in the field of international cultural exchange.
  2. ?2?Originality: Unique activities that maximize the effectiveness of own idea.
  3. ?3?Sustainability: Activities that have a track record of at least three years and have been steadily continued.
  4. ?4?Potential: Activities that are expected to continue being steady and actively in the future.
  5. ?5?Social Impact: Activities that promote social expansion and the power of penetration.

The Japan Foundation calls for nominations and self-nominations from across the country. The application form (Microsoft Word/PDF format) is available by downloading from the URL shown below. Please provide all required information and send the form by e-mail, fax or post.
*Anybody can make nominations for the Japan Foundation Prizes for Global Citizenship.
